Manitoba hopes it has the right mix in the pool when the 2012 Under-16 National Water Polo Club Championships makes waves in Winnipeg this weekend.

The provincial entry is one of 11 teams in the Canadian championship, joining entries from B.C., Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan at the Pan Am Pool. Action starts Friday and runs through Monday.

While water polo hot springs like B.C. and Quebec have multiple clubs in the event, Manitoba has had to amalgamate its pool of talent into one group, using players from Winnipeg clubs Bushido and Neptunes, plus the club in Selkirk. That’s made for an interesting dynamic over the last few months, some say, as the new faces have had to blend in right away.

“At the very beginning, I wasn’t sure how it was going to go,” said Hanika Nakagawa, who plays with Bushido. “But everyone came together right away. I was kind of surprised.”

Nakagawa, 15, is a rising star in the local waters. This will be her third Under-16 championship. The Winnipeg product has also appeared provincially in two Under-18 club championships, the latest coming earlier this month when Manitoba finished ninth out of 11 teams.

“This is exciting, playing a national at home is a new experience for all of us,” added 15-year-old Natalie Blouin. “I’m not sure if there is any advantage or anything like that. We might be a little more confident playing in our own pool.”

The women’s Under-16 team is one of four clubs within the provincial system, joining the men’s Under-16 club and the two Under-18 groups.

The man who oversees all of this is head coach Michael Reid, who returned to Manitoba water polo last fall after a six-year hiatus in Europe. Because he wears four different coaching hats, Reid will be in Victoria to monitor the men’s club championship this weekend, so Bushido coach Heather Carson will oversee the women’s operation.

Reid said the championships are a big moment for players looking to become the next Serena Bredin. The national team goaltender is from Winnipeg and spent her younger years with Bushido.

“For this tournament, there will definitely be coaches looking for kids for the developmental system, to ease them into the national program,” Reid said. “If we get a couple athletes identified for that, that will be a success for me.”

That process is well underway. Reid said the national program has already identified Nakagawa and Blouin, thanks to their participation at the under-18 championships.

On top of that, the head coach also says the players could make an impression on NCAA schools with a strong showing, following in the wake of Winnipeggers Breda Vosters and Shae Fournier — two national junior players who have earned respective scholarships at the University of California and Indiana through the sport.

But those progressions are still years away for the under-16 team. Right now, Reid would be pleased to have the event serve as a showcase for water polo in his hometown and possibly whet the appetite of some younger players to give the sport a go. Water polo participation numbers, especially those in the 10-14 age range, trend towards the shallow end, he says, and an influx of youth at the club-levels is badly needed.

“At this point I’m not really worried about winning medals — though that would be great,” Reid said. “I’m hoping to change the culture a bit; to have water polo be an option for kids.”

Manitoba’s first match is against Storm Blue (Vancouver) at 6:15 p.m. The tournament gets underway at 9 o’clock Friday morning.

16U Boys Nationals – UPDATE 2

In our last group game today we played the York Mavericks. Both of us had an 0-2 record. Winner goes to the 9-12th place games while the loser goes to the 12-15th place games.

This was going to be a very tough match which I really believed we could win. We had a slight modification to our existing game plan that I was confident the boys could pull off but to win they would have to do it almost 100% without error.

Although the York Mavericks lost to the same two teams, CAMO and St. Lambert, they played those teams much closer, losing to CAMO 22-11 and St. Lambert 8-7.

The boys came out really strong, starting by winning the swim off and scoring on the 1st possession. With 2:30 left in the 1st quarter Team Manitoba was up 4-2, then things started to fall apart with the Mavericks scoring 5 unanswered goals to end the quarter behind 7-4.

By the end of the 2nd quarter we were right back in the game trailing by only 1 goal, 7-6. The quarter ended though with Team Manitoba losing their team captain, Lee Walker, who fouled out with 3 majors.

By the end of the 3rd quarter it was 11-7 for the Mavericks. We were trying hard to keep pace with them but with an already short bench of 3 substitutes down to 2 and missing one of the stronger players on the team, we had a very big challenge to climb back into this game.

The 4th quarter ended with the Mavericks scoring 6 goals to our 2.

Mavericks 17 – Team Manitoba 9

2nd Game Star: Scott Bachus

Goal Scorers: Scott Bachus 4, Zev Robinson 1, Lee Walker 3, Chris McCallum 1

On Sunday will be Team Manitoba’s final two games of the tournament. If we win them both we will finish 12th.

Game Times are 10 and 1615 Winnipeg time.

Games can be viewed online at: http://www.livestream.com/ladnerstingraysswimming

This afternoon after our tough game with the Mavericks, the boys went out to sight see around Victoria with the parents who are here. Although this weekend is all about Water Polo, if the time is available then doing even small “cultural” excursions are an important part of not only building the athlete but also the person.

16U Boys Nationals – UPDATE 1

Day 1 is finished with TEAM MANITOBA playing two Quebec teams, CAMO and St. Lambert. Teams from Quebec are always strong, they have a very good Water Polo culture there with many viable clubs and they get lots of frequent and high quality matches on a regular basis. These first two games were not going to be easy.

First game was against CAMO from Montreal.

CAMO  21 – TEAM MANITOBA 4

3rd Game Star: Zev Robinson

Goal Scorers: Zev Robinson 1, Andre Chyzzy 1, Chris McCallum 2.

The second game of the day was against St. Lambert. This was going to be a close match and one that we had a good opportunity to do very well in.

St. Lambert 12 – TEAM MANITOBA 3

3rd Game Star: Lee Walker

Goal Scorers: Logan Karasinski- Borgstrom 1, Lee Walker 1, Scott Bachus 1.

Today the boys will play the York Mavericks who lost to St. Lambert by 1 goal. This will be another very good opponent for Team Manitoba.

A big thank you to Jo-Ann Stebbing (Chris McCallum’s mother) for filming all of our games with her video camera. After every game we do a video analysis and the boys watch either part or the entire game. It is a great teaching tool and something that is nice about these bigger tournaments because there is time to actually properly prepare and de-brief each game.

Penalty Shots

At this past Sundays practice we did penalty shots for the last 25 minutes. I have been teaching the athletes to keep the ball in the water and pick it up and shoot on the whistle instead of holding it up in the air. Here are some videos of some of the best players in the world taking penalty shots.

Ethan Davis named alternate to National Team

Congratulations to Ethan Davis for being named as one of 3 alternates to the born in 1994 National Team.

What this means is that if a player drops out of the main list for some reason then Ethan may get the call to join the team this summer.

Ethan being named as an alternate is a great example of “you gotta show up!” which is the first thing all athletes have to do in order to be a part of the Provincial Team.

Ethan was invited to attend a National Team try out camp back in April in Montreal. I can guarantee that if he did not go he would have ZERO chance of making the team or being named as an alternate.

Congratulations Ethan!
